What to Do : Cycling

With charming island and coastal features, thriving urban centres and vast tracks of regionally significant bushland, the Redlands has a wide range of cycling choices.

There’s a ride for everyone in the Redlands, from gently meandering foreshore cycleways, to more challenging road rides exploring the mainland and islands.

There are many bike paths in the Redlands worth exploring. Following are some of the region’s top cycling spots:

Cleveland Point (Shore St)
See Cassim's Hotel and sites marked by Heritage Trail signs on the ride to the Point, then picnic by the old Cleveland Lighthouse.
Black Swamp Wetlands (Shore St West & Queen St, Cleveland)
A fascinating ecosystem of birds and animals and vegetation in the heart of Cleveland. Point Halloran Conservation Reserve (Orana St, Victoria Point) See koalas in their natural habitat, ride along the boardwalk and visit the interpretive centre.
Wellington Point (Main Rd)
Ride from Main Rd shops to Wellington Point.
Point Lookout (Nth Stradbroke Is.)
No specific bike track from Dunwich to Point Lookout, for whale watching, surfing, swimming, gorge walks and wonderful white sand beaches. All bikes must go on barge only not water taxi. Please note that the bus to Point Lookout does not meet the barge.
Mount Cotton (Mount Cotton Rd)
For the active adventurer, cycle this mountain while enjoying sweeping panoramic views.
Coochiemudlo Island
Only a short ferry trip from Victoria Point, Coochie offers swimming, picnicking and a taste of the island lifestyle.

If you would like to discover some of the bikeways in the region, but don’t want to do it on your own, contact REDBUG - the Redlands Bicycle User Group. Phone: 3286 6676 or 0412 114 638. They meet regularly for social rides and events and cater for riders with all levels of fitness and experience.

There are plenty of other places to explore and the Redland Shire Council have produced a bikeways map for the entire shire. For a free copy of the Redlands Cycling and Walking Guide contact Redlands Tourism on 3821 0057.
