Driving on the Beach
Driving on the beach can be a wonderful holiday experience, but for your own safety, and the safety of other beach users and local wildlife please:
- Keep to the speed limit of 40kph on Flinders Beach and 60kph on Main Beach.
- Slow down when other vehicles are approaching.
- Slow down when approaching stationary vehicles.
- Slow down when you're approaching creek crossings (if unsure, get out and survey the crossing, checking ledge depth and hardness of sand).
- Follow tyre manufacturers' recommendations for tyre pressure when driving on sand.
- Respect resting sea birds by slowing down and trying to avoid disturbing them.
Do not
- Drive in the water.
- Drive in a reckless manner.
- Drive on any sand dunes, in rehabilitation areas or in vehicle restricted areas.
- Park your vehicle on any sand dunes or within the area of beach used for driving.
- Drive on the beach at high tide.
- Don't forget you need a permit to drive on island beaches. You can get one at the Visitor Information Centres at both Dunwich and Cleveland.
